Installation and Assembly of Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans remain one of the most popular household items used for comfort in hot and cold seasons.  A properly sized and installed ceiling fan will provide years of comfort and enjoyment of interior and exterior spaces.  In this page you will find highlights on what to consider when installing a ceiling fan.

What entails ceiling fan installation?

  1. Select the right ceiling fan. Key variables:
    – Location (indoor/outdoor) for weather resistance, when appropriate
    – Height (typically 8′-20′), this is the height of the ceiling
    – Size (diameter), will increase with the size of the room, for better airflow, coverage, and distribution
    – Functionality and features (with or without light, with our without remote), many fans come with an integrated light, and lately, with a remote control that may or may not include reversing option for seasonal changes in rotation.
  2. Proper assembly of the ceiling fan.
A ceiling fan has multiple tie and connection points, those include the blades attached to the body of the fan, the mechanical group attached to the pivoting bracket, and the pivoting bracket attached to the ceiling.  Some fans may include additional components including extension rods to reach a certain position in the room.

  3. Electric verification of capacity.
While most ceiling fans current draw can be handled by most electric circuits it is important to verify that the combination of the ceiling fan motor, lights, and any other potential load in the circuit do not exceed the circuit or circuit breaker limits.

  4. Structural verification of capacity.
Another very important element to consider is the ability of the ceiling box to hold the static and dynamic loads of the ceiling fan.  Not all boxes are ceiling-fan rated, and if one is not available a special box must be installed prior to installing the ceiling fan.
Please notice that a ceiling fan might still be installed in a non-ceiling-fan-rated electrical box, thus becoming a lingering risk of failure, injury and possibly death.

  5. Installation and testing.

Once the ceiling fan is installed it should be tested to verify performance of all the functions at every speed, including balancing and dynamic stability.

  6. Clean-up.
A job well-done should conclude with a clean site.

As you consider installing or replacing a ceiling fan please consider all the steps above; very often we receive inquiries of homeowners who, not being aware of the details involved in a professional ceiling fan installation, focus on the lowest possible installation cost which leads to improver and/or unsafe installations.

We at ServiceBeaver are very disciplined about responsible installation of ceiling fans, and making sure that you will have a safe and lasting operation of your fans for years to come.

How long does a ceiling fan installation/replacement take?

A standard ceiling fan installation (basic construction, no special features or elaborate light fixture, and 8′ ceiling height) takes between 60 to 90 minutes.  Time increases depending on construction of the ceiling fan, features, access to the installation area, and other on-site complexities.

How much does a typical ceiling fan installation cost?

Price depends on the type of ceiling fan, location, space available, local capabilities as in items 3. and 4. above, and ceiling height.  Our starting price for a ceiling fan with or without light fixture (no chandelier or similar) and 8′ ceiling is $225, which goes down when other services are purchased on the same visit.  Please note that this starting price is referential only and will vary depending on all the factors presented above.  For a better estimate please contact us with details of your fan and installation site.

When is best to install ceiling fans?

Weather-wise, for indoor ceiling fans there is no preferred season to install them, for outdoor ceiling fans it is preferable to install them when rainy or otherwise inclement weather can be avoided.  Since ceiling fans do take space to assemble please do take into account this so ample space is available in the room where the fan will be installed.  Reasonable space shall also be available for the ladder.

Please note that we at ServiceBeaver do not install ceiling fans in heights taller than 16′

What are other recommendations to tackle a ceiling fan assembly and installation project?

Select a responsible installer. As a dynamic, rotating element it is highly sensitive having an installation by someone that lacks the proper training and may skip important installation steps in order to finish the job faster.
