Make your bathroom safer

According to the CDC every year about 25% of adults falls, and 20% of these falls results in injuries. Falls in bathrooms are one of the causes of falls, which commonly happen in the shower and at the toilet. Installing grab bars in both of these locations is a recommended action to mitigate the risks of a fall.

What are safety bars / grab bars?

Safety bars, also known as grab bars are devices that provide support and improve stability. They are installed in locations where a person may need to maneuver or perform tasks with limited mobility or use of their extremities.

How long does it take to install a grab bar?

Installing safety bars is a relatively fast project when they are installed directly in drywall, and identifying a structural member such a stud location is possible. Installation time increases when grab bars are installed over tile, ceramic, porcelain, or very thick or hard media. In these situations special tools will be required to identify adequate anchor points and to drill the support holes.

How much does it cost to install a grab bar?

The cost to install a grab bar depends on the choice of bar and labor. Most grab bars range between $15 and $75; however, some luxury models may be much higher.

The labor cost to install a grab bar depends on the substrate where the grab bar will be installed, whether it is a drywall wall, a shower wall with tile/porcelain or other materials such as marble or granite. For a directional estimate, labor can start at $160 and be as high as $450 per grab bar; price may decrease when multiple grab bars are installed in the same visit.

If there is no available structural support to affix the safety bar to (such as a stud), special anchors may be required, which will increase the price range referenced above.

How difficult is it to install a safety bar?

Usually installing grab bars/safety bars is not a complex task; however, it is a project that requires both training and special tools.

Finding structural supports where to affix the grab bars requires specialized tools. Also, special drilling equipment will be required if the substrate is porcelain, ceramic, granite, quartz, or glass. In some cases where there is no structural support available, special anchors may be required in order to achieve the desired strength in the grab bar.
